How to use the ‘Take a break’ feature on YouTube

At its annual developer conference Google I/O 2018, Google took an initiative called Digital Wellbeing to help users to get rid of smartphone addiction. It had introduced new features like Dashboard, app timer, wind down and Do Not Disturb to curb smartphone usage.

Google has taken this further and integrated a similar feature in its YouTube app, termed as “Take a break” and as the name suggests, it reminds users to take a break after a certain time period of using the app.

Now if you are someone who forgets the track of time while watching videos on YouTube and wondering that how to use this feature, then fret not, here’s a small how to guide for you.

Prerequisite:

  • A smartphone running Android or iOS operating system.
  • Download the latest version of YouTube from Google Play Store and App store on your phone.

Steps to follow:

1. Open YouTube app on your smartphone.

2. Tap on the Account option from the top-right corner of the app (it can be your YouTube profile picture). 3. Then go to ‘Settings’ of the app.

4. And head to the ‘General’ section of the menu. 5. After this, you need to tap on ‘Remind me to take a break’ toggle.
6. Now, set the time interval from the ‘Reminder frequency’ pop-up and tap ‘Ok’ to save the settings.

4. And head to the ‘General’ section of the menu. 5. After this, you need to tap on ‘Remind me to take a break’ toggle.
6. Now, set the time interval from the ‘Reminder frequency’ pop-up and tap ‘Ok’ to save the settings.

YouTube will now notify you by sending a notification on your smartphone and to stop the reminder simply tap on ‘Dismiss’ option.

As far as other such features are concerned, the Dashboard feature will understand your phone usages habits and it will notify users to switch-off apps and spend time with your friends and family. The wind down feature will turn your phone’s display to grayscale at the chosen bedtime to remind you to go to sleep. It will also activate the Do Not Disturb mode on your phone. The app timer feature will let users set the limit on the app, and will notify them with a nudge.
These features will be the part of Google’s upcoming version of mobile OS, Android P.
